Project Overview

Monida is a fintech platform designed for Mexican users living in the United States who require a secure, simple, and—most importantly—zero-commission method to send money to their families. As the sole designer, my role was to conceptualize and design the first version of the product (MVP) with a clear objective: creating a high-fidelity functional prototype to secure initial investment.

The Challenge

The remittance market is saturated with options featuring hidden fees and complex processes. The challenge was to design an experience that conveyed immediate trust, especially for workers who might not have all their documentation in order but still need a safe banking method.

Business Objectives:

  1. Investor Appeal: Design a flawless international transfer flow to attract potential backers.
  2. Conversion: Simplify the identity validation (KYC) process to reduce user abandonment.

Strategy and Discovery

While the client provided a specific vision, I conducted a diagnostic phase to establish the strategic foundations of the design.

Competitive Benchmark (Market Analysis)

  • Traditional Players (Remitly/Western Union): Often characterized by traditional, sometimes slow processes and variable fees.
  • Digital Alternatives (Wise): Transparent but often focused on a more corporate or digitally advanced profile.
  • Monida’s Opportunity: A "human-centric" approach for Latino workers, removing commission barriers and facilitating cash deposits at participating physical stores.

Design Solutions

  1. Main Feature: International Money Transfer

As the primary selling point, this flow required multiple iterations to balance simplicity with financial rigor.

The Solution: I eliminated visual noise, focusing on real-time exchange rates and the clear "Zero Commission" promise. This created a flow that felt both fluid and secure, essential for the client's investment pitches.

  1. The KYC Challenge (Identity Validation)

Identity verification is where most fintechs lose users.

The Solution: I designed a step-by-step guide with micro-interactions for document capture (INE, Passport) and biometric validation (Selfie). We transformed a dense legal requirement into a series of simple tasks, educating users on why their money is protected without overwhelming them.

Visual Identity

I developed a Style Guide that balanced the modern feel of a fintech with the perceived solidity of a traditional bank.

Results

Working directly with the founder allowed for agile decision-making focused on business value.

  • Strategic Milestone: The design fulfilled its primary purpose, serving as the centerpiece to secure the desired investment.
  • Scalability: The delivered structure allowed the product to continue growing with new features and partnerships while maintaining the original visual and experience foundation I established.
